ClientHello TLSv1 and not TLSv1.2

I have this snippet of code

public static void main(String...args) {
        System.setProperty("javax.net.debug", "all");
        System.setProperty("https.protocols","TLSv1.2,TLSv1.1,TLSv1");

        RestTemplate restTemplate = new RestTemplate();

        HttpClient httpClient = HttpClientBuilder.create()
                .setMaxConnTotal(10)
                .build();
        restTemplate.setRequestFactory(new HttpComponentsClientHttpRequestFactory(httpClient));

        restTemplate.postForObject(url, null, TokenValidation.class);
    }

Turn on javax.net.debug=all, running this under JDK8, there's no error. I can see

However, when running under JDK7, I don't understand why ClientHello always is TLSv1, and not TLSv1.2 even though I have specified the https.protocols="TLSv1.2,TLSv1.1,TLSv1" earlier? This is the trace under JDK7

Hai Quach On

This is because of JDK 8 support TLSv1.2 by default, but not JDK 7.

You set system properties to support 3 protocols version, but you haven't use that properties when building your httpclient. HttpClient should look like below

HttpClient httpClient = HttpClientBuilder.create()
                .useSystemProperties()
                .setMaxConnTotal(10)
                .build();

Note, If you set connection manager in HttpClient, it will override the system properties.

So, another way is to use SSLConnectionSocketFactory to set supported protocols. Then create connection manager with that factory. I would suggest to look at source code of HttpClientBuilder.build() to know more details.

Hope this help.
