Spring SimpleThreadScope registered but not found when AbstractBeanFactory.doGetBean() is called

Question

UPDATE: With some further debugging, I can see now that when AbstractBeanFactory.doGetBean() is called "thread" exists in the parentBeanFactory.scopes but not in the scopes for this bean factory (presumably the WebApplicationContext).

I have a fairly simple Spring MVC webapp which is configured very much like the spring-petclinic application. I'm trying to use SimpleThreadScope (yes I am aware of the caveats, and I don't want to use request scope), but it is not working as expected.

First, I tried using a thread scoped bean that my controller would use. But I found that different threads were always sharing the same instance of that bean. So I tried declaring my Controller as being thread scoped by using the annotation @Scope(value="thread").

Using the Eclipse/STS debugger, I can see that my CustomScopeConfigurer is working correctly and registering the SimpleThreadScope under the key "thread". But subsequently when servicing a web request, an exception is thrown stating No scope registered for scope 'thread':

After a bit more debugging I found that when AbstractBeanFactory.doGetBean() is called "thread" exists in the parentBeanFactory.scopes but not in the scopes for this bean factory (presumably the WebApplicationContext).

So the solution seems to be to configure the CustomScopeConfigurer for both the WebApplicationContext and for it's parent context. e.g. in both the DispatcherServlet application context config and in the context specified by ContextLoaderListener. Doing this will ensure that the scope is registered for both bean factories.
