OpenAI Authentication error: No API key provided for open ai api

Question

AuthenticationError: No API key provided. You can set your API key in code using 'openai.api_key = ', or you can set the environment variable OPENAI_API_KEY=). If your API key is stored in a file, you can point the openai module at it with 'openai.api_key_path = '. You can generate API keys in the OpenAI web interface.

I am running this on collab the current code I am using

as it suggested to change 'openai.api_key = ' in the error box when I changed from openai.api_key = os.getenv('API-KEY') to openai.api_key = <API-KEY> it gave syntax error

Instead of this:

openai.api_key  = os.getenv('API-KEY')

Do this:

openai.api_key = 'abcde12345789'

Okay, you're working in a Google Colab, I see. Had similar issue in Colab, going from this code:

Which gave error:

AuthenticationError: No API key provided. You can set your API key in code using 'openai.api_key = <API-KEY>', or you can set the environment variable OPENAI_API_KEY=<API-KEY>). If your API key is stored in a file, you can point the openai module at it with 'openai.api_key_path = <PATH>'. You can generate API keys in the OpenAI web interface. See https://platform.openai.com/account/api-keys for details.

Since not needing an environment variable, it worked by removing the .getenv from the openapi boilerplate:

openai.api_key = "thisisadummyapikey123456789"

Can you try this first to make sure your authentication by itself is ok?

After that if still issues, please also document your environmental variable setup here, so we can look further.
