How do I limit the number of characters in my input?

In the following code I want max 14 characters.

<script language='JavaScript'>
function SomenteNumero(e){
    var tecla=(window.event)?event.keyCode:e.which;
    if((tecla>47 && tecla<58)) return true;
    else{
        if (tecla==8 || tecla==0) return true;
    else  return false;
    }
}
</script>

<input type='text' size='10' value='' onkeypress='return SomenteNumero(event)'>

This can be done with html

<input type="text" name="username" maxlength="14">

If you dont trust client side validation:

$maxlength = 14;
$string = $_POST['string'];
if(strlen($string) > $maxlength) {
$string = substr($string, 0, $maxlength);
