Adding/Updating below Gradle dependency for Apache Poi should resolve the issue .

compile group: 'org.apache.poi', name: 'poi', version: '4.1.2'
compile group: 'org.apache.poi', name: 'poi-ooxml', version: '4.1.2'

If you imported properly and added jar files such as poi and poi-ooxml and still facing issues then try this version

its work ... and hope your issues will solved.

<dependency>
    <groupId>org.apache.poi</groupId>
    <artifactId>poi</artifactId>
    <version>3.17</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
    <groupId>org.apache.poi</groupId>
    <artifactId>poi-ooxml</artifactId>
    <version>3.17</version>
</dependency>

i know this may be late but the problem was that you may ignore the file xmlbeans-2.6.0.jar which is in separate file from other apache jar (ooxml-lib)

You need the file poi-ooxml.jar in your classpath as @Jens said.

You are using the correct import statement but it seems that you don't have the file poi-ooxml.jar in the class path of your web container.

If you are using maven, you should put this dependency in your pom.xml inside the <dependencies> tag:

    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.apache.poi</groupId>
        <artifactId>poi</artifactId>
        <version>3.15</version>
    </dependency>

    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.apache.poi</groupId>
        <artifactId>poi-ooxml</artifactId>
        <version>3.15</version>
    </dependency>
