Fabric curvedText spacing / kerning issues

1k views Asked by At

I'm trying to fix a spacing/kerning issue i've come across in the fabric.curvedText.js extension.

curvedText.js

https://github.com/Skritz/fabric.curvedText/blob/master/curvedText.js

When Adding capital letters into a sentence it's seems to throw off the spacing between each letters on the radius.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

HTML & CSS

font-size: 13px;

.canvas-box{

height: 700px;
margin: auto;
}
.canvas-box .canvas-nav{
width: 200px;
height: 462px;
float: left;
position: relative;
background: #E9E9E9;
padding: 20px;
}
.canvas-box .canvas-wrap{
float: left;

I just fixed this issue in another curved text extension for fabricjs:

https://github.com/EffEPi/fabric.curvedText

You can try using this one, or adapting the corrected code to the extension you are using. The key is in this line:

curAngle = (i * parseInt( this.opts.spacing )) + parseInt( this.opts.rotate ) - align;

What this does is space each letter from the previous one by a fixed width. You need to space it depending on the letter size. In my code I did it like this:

thisLetterAngle = ((this.letters.item(i).width + space) / this.radius) / (Math.PI/180);
curAngleRotation = multiplier * ((multiplier * curAngle) + lastLetterAngle + (thisLetterAngle/2));
curAngle = multiplier * ((multiplier * curAngle) + lastLetterAngle);
angleRadians=curAngle*(Math.PI/180);
lastLetterAngle = thisLetterAngle;

This code calculates the angle where the next letter will be, using the formula angle = circunference / radius curAngleRotation is the rotation I will apply to the letter and I need it in grades curAngle is the position in the circumference where the letter will be and I need it in radians multiplier is set to 1 for a concave effect and -1 for convexe

And after the calculations, it's important to first set the angle of the letter, and then position the letter

this.letters.item(i).setAngle(curAngleRotation);
this.letters.item(i).set('top', multiplier*-1*(Math.cos(angleRadians)*this.radius));
this.letters.item(i).set('left', multiplier*(Math.sin(angleRadians)*this.radius));
