Calling a Service within an Activity

What would be the simplest way I could call this particular Service within an Activity? I want this to run in background while I get continuous location updates getting sent to my MainActivity. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

public class LocationService extends Service implements GoogleApiClient.ConnectionCallbacks,
    GoogleApiClient.OnConnectionFailedListener, LocationListener {

// LogCat tag
private static final String TAG = LocationService.class.getSimpleName();

private final static int PLAY_SERVICES_RESOLUTION_REQUEST = 1000;

private Location mLastLocation;

// Google client to interact with Google API
private GoogleApiClient mGoogleApiClient;

// boolean flag to toggle periodic location updates
private boolean mRequestingLocationUpdates = false;

private LocationRequest mLocationRequest;

// Location updates intervals in sec
private static int UPDATE_INTERVAL = 10000; // 10 sec
private static int FATEST_INTERVAL = 5000; // 5 sec
private static int DISPLACEMENT = 10; // 10 meters

@Override
public void onCreate() {
    super.onCreate();

    mGoogleApiClient = new GoogleApiClient.Builder(this)
            .addConnectionCallbacks(this)
            .addOnConnectionFailedListener(this)
            .addApi(LocationServices.API).build();

}

@Override

    if (mGoogleApiClient != null) {
        mGoogleApiClient.connect();
        togglePeriodicLocationUpdates();
    }
    return START_NOT_STICKY;
}

@Override

    return null;
}

protected void createLocationRequest() {
    mLocationRequest = new LocationRequest();
    mLocationRequest.setInterval(UPDATE_INTERVAL);
    mLocationRequest.setFastestInterval(FATEST_INTERVAL);
    mLocationRequest.setPriority(LocationRequest.PRIORITY_HIGH_ACCURACY);
    mLocationRequest.setSmallestDisplacement(DISPLACEMENT);
}

        mRequestingLocationUpdates = true;

        startLocationUpdates();

        Log.d(TAG, "Periodic location updates started!");

    } else {

        mRequestingLocationUpdates = false;

    }

    LocationServices.FusedLocationApi.requestLocationUpdates(

    createLocationRequest();
}

}

@Override

    Log.i(TAG, "Connection failed: ConnectionResult.getErrorCode() = "
            + result.getErrorCode());
}

The application can start the service with the help of the Context.startService method. The method will call the onCreate method of the service if service is not already created; else onStart method will be called. Here is the code:

Intent serviceIntent = new Intent();
serviceIntent.setAction("com.testApp.service.MY_SERVICE");
startService(serviceIntent);

you can use a LocalBrodcastManager. Use it to register a BroadcastReceiver in your Activity, and from your service broadcast the new coordinates when the location is updated. To register/unregister the receiver you can use

LocalBroadcastManager.getInstance(this).registerReceiver

and

LocalBroadcastManager.getInstance(this).unregisterReceiver

To broadcast an intent you have to use

LocalBroadcastManager.getInstance(this).sendBroadcast(intent);

your broadcast receiver will get the intent you broadcast
